The Tease!

I bet you’re curious to know why I called this blog the tease.  Well when I think of The Loft it is a tease.  Actually, I would have renamed the movie The Tease.  She jokes.

Seriously it’s been an ongoing tease from the very beginning for me.  First there were the behind the scenes photos of Went and his interviews which were a huge tease and then the news that it was going to be released a year later was another tease. Then came the disappointing news that the release of the movie was postponed for another year due to financial hiccups etc., (I’m not going to go into detail because that’s past history now), but anyway then came the promotional photos and those teased me a heck of a lot because they were oh so seductive and sexy and got me all excited in more ways than one.  And the thought and anticipation of Went attending The Loft premier was a further tease.

Then yesterday I thought I’d check out when The Loft was going to premiere in SA, so I googled the movie theatres and it was advertised as premiering at a theatre some distance from where I live at 8.00 pm on the 29^thJanuary, 2015 (can you believe). I thought this was too good to be true … but there it was.  I got so excited I logged out, ran for the phone …. logged back in and googled the site and lo and behold it wasn’t there anymore. It had obviously been removed.  Now how’s that for a tease.  I've tried to call the number listed and it’s been engaged for two days.

Gosh! At this rate The Loft is going to give me heart failure if this teasing doesn’t stop very soon. Just to add to all of the taunting, this morning I wake up to all of the pictures of Went attending the premiere of The Loft at the DGA Theatre on Tuesday (January 27, 2015) in West Hollywood, California.  I don’t have to tell you that any picture of Went is a huge tease and there he was.  Of course, Went looked absolutely charming as he always does in every photo of his.

Well Went sweetheart, (if you ever read this), hopefully I will get to see The Loft very soon, whether it’s on the big screen or not.  I’m going to make sure that I see you in this movie come hell or high water because I’ve been dying to see you in it for so long now, and I know that I won’t be disappointed.  I’m positive it’s going to be worth the wait or worth the dying for.

The Revenge Of The Rogues!

I’m not sure what it is with the Universe and me but whenever I’m about to see Went in anything, it sure likes to play little games with me.

 

This morning I woke up with such excitement because I knew that the Flash was going to be on TV tonight with Went and Dom in it.  I’ve been looking forward to seeing The Revenge of the Rogues for so long now.  I began the morning counting the hours and by 1 pm it became the minutes. I thought that I’d start the dinner early.  I had the casserole in the oven at 2.00 pm. At precisely 2.15 pm the lights were turned off.  In SA we are experiencing major blackouts, so every day South Africans wait in anticipation for the big switch off and can you believe it today of all days they decided to throw the switch?  Just when I thought I’d beat the system … all my preparations for cooking the dinner early when straight down the tubes.  Literally …

Takeaways were then on the menu and that meant finding a place that had gas cookers to cook the takeaways.  Meanwhile I was low on gas/petrol in the car and I knew that none of the Gas/Petrol Stations would be able to help me out because the pumps weren’t working either due to the blackout.  Fortunately, I managed to find a place about 2kms away that was able to accommodate me.  I made it home on the smell of an oil rag.  Who knows if I’ll have enough gas in my car tomorrow to get to the petrol/gas station but that’s another story and another hurdle to overcome.

Getting back to my main dilemma that being the Flash and those naughty Rogues, at 4.00 pm the electricity was still off.  I started counting the hours again.  I must add here that I had set the PVR decoder to record the episode for backup but I wanted to see Went in action so badly that it somehow didn’t pacify me in the least that I would be able to watch the episode later on. Anyway at 7.15 pm the lights came on … just 15 minutes before the Flash was to start.  How’s that for luck?

I settled down and sat glued to the screen.  I couldn’t wait to see Went and Dom and when they finally did, it was literally a smashing event.  I’m not going to go into detail about the show because I know that there are some fans that haven’t had the privilege of seeing it.  What I will tell you though is that Leonard Snart is one mean character and if he ever got to read this blog I hope that all my T’s have been crossed and my I’s have been dotted, because I’m going to be in a heap of trouble with him if they aren’t that’s for sure. 

I’ve always said that I don’t go for bad guys, but Leonard Snart aka Captain Cold just does something to me that gets me warm all over.

What a terrific actor Went is. 

It just goes to show that Went can play any character he wishes to and that goes for Dom too.   I thoroughly enjoyed both of their performances and I honestly can’t wait to see them together again, very soon.

Q: What primarily attracted us to this film (THE LOFT) is the great, diverse quintet of men who are leading it: You, Danish star Matthias Schoenaerts, lady-killer James Marsden, sci-fi star Karl Urban, and Eric Stonestreet, who of course has shown his diversity playing a gay dad on Modern Family. Can you discuss how this cast came together? Was the diversity of it part of what excited you about the project?

I think they put together a strong cast, but the reason I said "yes" was the part. It was different than anything I'd done before. On PRISON BREAK I was "the man with a plan." This time I got to be the guy who's just lucky to be invited to the party. And then wishes he'd stayed home.

Q: To be honest, info about this film is limited--very cloak and dagger! But I have one source listing you as having written the script, and another crediting it to other writers. How involved were you with the writing? Did you opt to use a pseudonym, like you did with STOKER?

No idea where that rumor came from. I didn't have anything to do with the script.

Q: This is a remake of a Danish film, which also starred Matthias. What would you say is the greatest difference between the original and the American version? Was there a significant cultural shift that changed the tone of the piece?

For me, as far as making sure these characters really felt like American men, like the story was really set here in this country, it was about being conscious of the small stuff - the nicknames, the banter, the body language when the guys get together, how and when they hug or don't hug. The subtleties. All of that can help create an energy and a vibe that feels culturally specific and true.

Q: From what we can tell from the synopsis, the movie--about a group of men who meet their mistresses in a private place, then wind up with a murder on their hands--explores the comeuppances of those who step out on their significant others. How did you approach the moral conflicts of that? What are your own thoughts on it?

I never looked at it as some kind of morality play because I was taught that it's a mistake for the actor to judge the character. If you're judging your character you're outside of it. And you want to be inside.

I saw the story as being more about how hard it is to really know other people. You can spend years with someone, think you know them like the back of your hand, then one day you find yourself in a totally unique set of circumstances and they're behaving in this way you'd never expect. And you're like, "I don't know who you are right now." It's disorienting. And then of course the follow-up question is, "What am I really capable of? When push comes to shove?" Probably more than we'd care to admit.

Q: What was the most enjoyable part of being involved with this production? Can you give us a few offbeat, funny, or unique anecdotes about the process of making the film?

I seem to remember a lot of singing between takes. James has a very good voice.

Q: People are constantly discussing the lack of diverse roles for gay actors, but so far, you, like Neil Patrick Harris, are openly gay while still portraying straight men--specifically straight men who are (ostensibly, in the case of THE LOFT) actively sexual. What's your general opinion on this? Describe the types of roles you're most interested in playing as you progress in your career.

Just to clarify, I wasn't out when we shot this. Not professionally. So I can't speak to what the people who hired me did or didn't know about my sexuality or if that had any bearing on my casting. I'd like to believe that it didn't.

If you're asking why there aren't more openly gay actors getting cast in straight parts - in movies, specifically, because I think TV is different - I don't know. I'm sure there are any number of factors. Hopefully it's not about Hollywood still wondering if gay actors can play straight or if audiences are going to accept gay actors playing straight characters. Because the answer to both of those questions is "yes." In my opinion.

Q: Since the release of STOKER and the disclosure of your sexual orientation were in pretty close proximity, it almost felt to me as if you came out as gay and as a screenwriter concurrently. You were initially tight-lipped about both, and remained pretty modest about the project (STOKER). What was it like having those professional and personal revelations coincide?

It's an interesting idea but I don't know if I'd necessarily connect the timing of one with the other. I wrote STOKER in 2010, the movie came out in March of 2013 and I posted my response to the Russian film festival invite - which I consider my official coming out - the following August.

If there's a connection between "coming out" as a screenwriter and coming out as a gay man, it probably has something to do with me pushing my own boundaries. My sense of what was possible. I didn't think of myself as a writer, so I didn't write. I didn't think of myself as someone who could afford to come out, so I didn't come out. But then I realized that these were self-imposed limitations. I think sometimes we need to become activists in our own lives and fight against the existing order. Against our own beliefs about who we are and what we're capable of.

Q: How have your ambitions changed since shifting some of your focus to writing, and how do you anticipate that balance continuing?

"Balance" is the key word. For sure. For the last couple of years it's been all about the writing. Which has been great. But I don't want to only tell stories sitting at my desk staring at my laptop. I want to use my body. My voice. Give life to someone else's words. So the hope is to do both. To act and to write. If I can swing it.

Q: Since coming out, you've been very outspoken not just about your beliefs, but about your past, eloquently saying things like, "What you think of as scars are medals." How is the work that you're doing now related to you processing your own past, and what projects are you eyeing that might help you continue to express your own ideals and experiences?

I have found that putting things down on paper helps me to process them. I guess that's why so many people keep a journal. And there have been times when I've slipped something personal into a script I've been working on. Just a detail or two. And that always feels a little risky. But nine times out of ten when someone reads it and gives me feedback that's what they'll zero in on. And they'll be like, "That's the part that made me laugh" or cry or what have you. If I finish a script and it feels like I failed to reveal something about myself on the page, something I'd hesitate to say out loud to someone who knows me maybe, then I know I haven't pushed the script far enough.

Q: Finally, what's your favorite whodunit and why?

I just saw CLUE with Tim Curry for the first time. Which was great. Don't know how I missed that one.

A Happy Duo!

Well it's certainly true when they say that patience is a virtue because it’s definitely paid off for me.  I’ve been waiting in anticipation to see a live interview with Went and Dom talking about their reunion on the “Flash” and I can honestly tell you it was worth the wait that’s for sure.

The interview was an absolute delight to watch.  I found myself laughing and giggling along with Went and Dom.  It almost felt as if I was in the same room with them.  As for Went’s addiction to M&M’s, well that was the peanut to my butterexcuse the expression but it really was.  It’s interesting to know what Went finds appetising and how selective and choosy he is. Gosh!  I have a mental picture of the inside of Went’s suitcase now.  Can you just imagine catering for Went’s every whim? I can.  It would be a delightful pleasure wouldn’t you agree? 

Dom has such a marvellous sense of humour and I can honestly see why Went enjoys working with him so much.  Dom would have me in stiches too.  I enjoy someone’s company who can make me laugh. It always makes me feel soooo good inside. 

Thank goodness that Went can drive … he could drive my car any day.  Come to think of it, I think I’d feel completely safe with Went behind the wheel anytime.  After all let’s face it; Went does have a drive for excellence and detail in his personal life and professional life.  He also exudes confidence and serenity which are two qualities I really admire in a person.  So yeah, I can honestly say without a doubt that I would feel completely safe with Went in any scenario for that matter.  Wouldn’t you?

Last but not least, I have to mention Went’s adorable expressions and his endearing mannerisms.  I know that I keep writing about how cute Went is but I just can’t help myself.  I think he is the cutest thing next to bubble-gum but in Went’s case … it would be next to peanut butter cups of course.

Shine On!

Went attended the CW 2015 Winter Television Critics Association press tour at the Langham Huntington Hotel & Spa on January 11, 2015 in Pasadena, California and was onstage with the 'Arrow' and 'The Flash' panel.

As always Went stood out from the crowd so to speak.  No it wasn’t because he wore red pants, a green jacket and a navy blue shirt that I thought was very charming.  It was his natural beautiful light that simply glows wherever he is.  Actually it really doesn’t matter what Went wears or what he is doing.  Went’s presence just lights up any occasion.

Linger On!

Is it just me or is there a certain kind of magic in the air that just seems to linger on and on and on?  My gut feeling tells me that it’s got nothing to do with Christmas and all to do with a very special man … Wentworth Miller!  He seems to have that strange effect on me.

Here’s why!

First of all Went had the decency to wish all of his fans a Happy New Year on his FB page.  Don’t get me wrong there was no exclamation mark after his greeting to make a point, but simply a full stop to get to the point.  Yep!  No flowery message just a simple Happy New Year, everyone. Plain and simple. Yet so sincere and very sweet.  Went didn’t have to write a flowery message for me but knowing that he actually typed the words filled me with joy and that feeling of joy continued to linger on for a whole day. 

Then on Friday, 2^nd of January 2015 Went shared a beautiful song with his fans on his FB Page performed by Simon and Garfunkel called “For Emily Wherever I May Find Her.”

After watching and listening to the song, I was left completely breathless …   mm mm perhaps I should have called my title “Breathless” instead.  Went also has that effect on me too.

Anyway, I’m sure you can guess what happened to me after listening to the song can’t you?  I had the tune lingering in my heart and head right through the night.  It continued haunting me the following day too.  Linger … Linger … Linger… 

If that's not enough! Went goes and does it again!  He posts a quote on his FB page the following evening.  I mean it was just a quote for heaven’s sake.  I read quotes every day on FB and they don’t linger on for the remainder of the evening keeping me awake, but Went’s quote did.  I kept going over the quote over and over again.  Crazy but true!

This is the lingering quote … for your sake I hope it doesn’t affect you as it did me.

… and so the lingering continues tonight too ... with more of Went's haunting material on his FB page.

Intact!

What a way to start the New Year!

Went was photographed with a fan wearing his bucket hat.  Thank goodness!

I’m able to rest now knowing that both he and his hat are safe and sound and that they’re both intact!  This photo assures me that I don’t have to fret and that whatever happens, Went and his hat will never ever be parted.
