“The Oscar Statuettes”
Exhibit 1
I’m interested in The Oscar’s but this certainly “takes the cake” and I can honestly say without a doubt that I’ve been haunted!
I guess you’re wondering what I’m writing about so I’d like to elaborate.
It started off in the early hours of Monday morning at 2.00 am SAST (South Africa Standard Time) with “The Oscars 2014“ being broadcast live on Multichoice’s digital satellite TV service namely DSTV. (I’m being precise with the facts here … because as you read further and if you’re observant enough you’ll be able to put two and two together and make a logical deduction behind the motivation of this blog.)
I’m an avid movie goer and you could say that I’m very much like Went in this regard. Therefore, when it comes to The Oscars I’m always keen to see who the winners are of the different categories. I’m not particularly interested in the fashion side of The Oscars but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t watch the “Red Carpet on E” as a warm up before the show. It gives me an idea of who attended. I’d be lying too if I told you that I never scouted the crowd looking out for Went. I know it sounds silly but what’s wrong in hoping?
I sincerely hope that someday I will be given the opportunity to write that it was indeed a fact that Went attended the Oscars and that he was there to pick up an award.
I settled down to watch the “Red Carpet on E” and as it carried on I found myself dosing off eventually. Now keep in mind I’m talking about approximately 2h30 am SAST in the morning. I decided to record the rest of the programme and retire to bed.

I drifted off to sleep and found myself dreaming that I saw Went all dressed up to the nines in a black tuxedo with a black bow tie and black shiny shoes strolling casually with his one hand tucked inside his trouser pocket on the Red Carpet at the Oscars. I remember that when I saw him my heart skipped a beat with excitement. I thought how wonderful it was to see him there and I knew (don’t ask me why) but that he was there to accept an Oscar … and as this thought came to me he disappeared into the crowd. Suddenly I found myself inside the Dolby Theatre and I saw Sir Alfred Hitchcock standing on stage with a huge envelope in his hand. He proceeded to read out the winner for Best Original Screenplay and instinctively I knew that it was Went’s screenplay. People were standing clapping and cheering and they were looking around to see if they could see Went and so was I but he was nowhere to be seen. What seemed an eternity, Went suddenly came sprinting down the aisle to claim his prize. To my delight I saw Went and "Alfie" greet each other with a “Homie Handshake” ending it with a huge bear hug. Went then proceeded to accept the award from "Alfie" and turned to face the audience with a huge big grin on his face. He stretched his long arms up towards the ceiling clasping the golden Oscar in both hands in triumph. At that precise moment I heard a clang and bang outside my window. I immediately woke up.

I clambered out of bed and went through to the TV lounge, and opened the sliding door overlooking my garden outside. To my surprise I noticed that the cable to my telephone line had suddenly disappeared and it occurred to me that "thieves in the night" had just paid me a visit and snipped the line. Fearing for my safety I slid the door closed. (Cable theft is rife in my country and is a very serious offence. These offenders are also known to be armed and dangerous.) I just thought I’d put it out there. It's been the third time that this has happened to me this year and I’ve now decided to go the WiFi way for my landline too.
Getting back to my dream please refer to what a “Homie Handshake” is in exhibit 4 below.
The next morning when my alarm went off I was awakened by the radio announcer mentioning Oscar. I never paid much attention to what he was saying at the time because I was slightly dazed from the late night before and the dream I’d had of Went and the theft thereafter. I then proceeded to the kitchen. I snapped on the radio and the first thing I heard was “Oscar”. I swung around at the mention of the name and honed in on what the announcer was talking about and it was all about Oscar Pistorius’ murder trial. It then struck me that the “Oscar Pistorius’ Trial” started that day. To my dismay the announcer then proceeded to speak about “The 2014 Oscars” straight after that. It was “The Oscar went to … so and so and so and” … but before he got another word out I snapped off the radio. This guy was going to ruin my evening viewing by telling me who won at “The Oscars”. I wasn’t about to let that happen!
At 10 am I snapped on the TV to see what was going on with the Oscar Pistorius Trial out of pure curiosity and needless to say there was that name again Oscar this and Oscar that.
Today is Thursday 6thMarch 2014 and I would like to state on record that I’ve now been haunted by Oscar.
I find myself switching to the Oscar Pistorius Trial on TV at every free moment I’ve got. I’ve even begun to speak in a judicial manner. I’ve found myself observing and taking notes of everything I do and what I say, and to whom I say it to, and who says and does what to whom, and at what precise times it is said and done, and what noises I hear and what the different sounds are and where they come from.
To conclude it looks like the haunting of Oscar is going to carry on for some time too. It could be weeks, months or even years from now. I hope not. I’m not sure how much more I can take but I’ll definitely keep you posted. That’s if I still have any sanity left. [She jokes.]
